What a great way to finish out the regular season! Nearly everyone ran season personal records at the Tiger Invite at Elmwood Park High School and the girls team is once again showing they have the talent to qualify for State this year. Bring on the postseason!
Girls Varsity Race - Results (Team Results)
While the Tiger Invite is a smaller meet than some of the other meets we’ve been to such as Mane Event, Richard Spring, and the Joliet Central Steelmen Invite, it has some bigger schools like those invites. Of the schools at the invite, only Aurora Christian is a fellow 1A school and they are almost twice our size. Despite this, the girls finished 5th in the race tying the team’s best-ever finish at the Tiger Invite. Junior Dani Erickson once again led the way for the girls and came tantalizingly close to breaking 20 minutes for the first time this season. Dani finished in 14th place with a season P.R. of 20:03. Sophomore Jennifer Duban had one of her best races of the season and earned a ribbon for her 21st place finish in 20:54. This was the first time this season Jen broke 21 minutes and her third-fastest time ever. Freshman Madi Madsen started out more conservatively than her teammates in the first mile, but her last mile was faster than everyone except Dani and she nearly ended up catching Jen. Madi’s 23rd place finish in 20:59 marked the first time she broke 21 minutes in a race and it is the first time this season we have had three runners under 21. Senior Anya Kutkoski turned in one of her best races of the season and set a season P.R. just like all of her teammates ahead of her. Anya earned a ribbon for her 29th place and finished in 21:24. This is the fastest time Anya has run in two years and she is really hitting her stride at the right time. The biggest improvement in the race has to go to our #5 runner, junior Molly Martin. Molly finally had her breakout race and ran the most consistent splits of anyone on the team by running 7:53, 8:03, and 7:45. Molly finished in 65th place and her time of 23:42 eclipsed her season P.R. by over a minute! Finally, sophomore Rose Helderle finished in 80th place with a time of 26:26.
Boys Varsity Race - Results (Team Results)
Junior Simon Klein turned in another solid race as he stays focused on trying to qualify for State as an individual. He will probably need to be in the 17-minute range to do so. His time today of 18:33 wasn’t his best effort, but he is figuring things out and will be where he needs to be for the postseason. The big surprise in the boys race was freshman Cayden Denhart. I told him a few weeks ago that he was going to break 20 minutes this season. Not only did he break 20 minutes in his first varsity race, he demolished the 20-minute mark with a 19:39 as he finished as the team’s second runner. Sophomore Liam Newton has made a habit of catching junior Aiden Slehofer in the final stretch. Liam finished in 95th place with a time of 19:54 (his third time under 20 this season) while Aiden finished in 97th place with a time of 20:05. Junior Jimmy Mullen , junior Lincoln Calfo, and freshman Blake Madsen spent the first two miles of the race running as a pack and crossed the two-mile mark together. Jimmy eventually broke from the pack and had the third-fastest final mile on the team (behind Simon and Liam Newton) to finish in 109th place with a time of 20:53, which was a lifetime P.R. for him. Blake, in his first varsity race, finished next in 113th place and also ran a lifetime P.R. of 21:14. Lincoln finished with a season P.R. of 21:34 in 117th place as the boys finished in 14th place as a team.
Girls Open Race - Results
Freshman Violet King ran in a race on her own for the second time, and for the second time dropped a two-minute P.R. Maybe her teammates have been holding her back. For the first time in a three-mile race, Violet ran a sub-10 minute mile when she crushed a 9:58 first mile. She slowed a bit over the last two miles, but still ended up running her fastest time of the year in 32:33.
Boys Open Race - Results
Freshman Liam Marquez had to run this race solo with Cayden and Blake moving to the varsity squad. He made the most of it, though, and ran his first sub-9 minute mile of the season when he started the race with an 8:48 mile. He ran a respectable 10:07 for the middle mile, but came back and had another great mile to finish the race in 28:18, which was a P.R. of over a minute for him.
Lion of the Meet
With all the personal records this week, it was another week where it was hard to pick a Lion of the Meet. Dani once again turned in a solid race and continues to improve incrementally every week and lead our girls team to new heights. Jen had what was probably her best race of the year and broke 21 minutes for the first time this year. Jimmy, Blake, and Lincoln did a great job running together and pushing each other through the first two miles of the race before Jimmy broke from the pack to set a new lifetime P.R. Cayden ran like a freshman running in varsity isn’t a big deal and promptly became our #2 runner while breaking 20 minutes for the first time. Molly had a fantastic breakout race while running a season P.R. as our crucial #5 runner. It is hard to ignore Violet, though, who for two straight weeks has busted out two-minute P.R.s and run her strongest races of the season. Violet has one more week at conference to maybe finish the season with another big P.R. Congrats, Violet!
